Explore Local Railroad History
Inside the depot, you’ll find a fascinating collection of artifacts that tell the story of railroading in Mineral Point and Southwestern Wisconsin. Our exhibits feature items spanning more than a century of history—from Civil War–era documents related to the Mineral Point Railroad and Illinois Central Railroad, to historic photos and maps from the “golden era” of railroading between 1890 and 1925.
The story continues through the decades that followed. Displays from 1930 to 1980 reflect a time when railroading remained a proud profession, even as it slowly transitioned from being the center of everyday community life.
The People Behind the Railroad
The museum isn’t just about trains—it’s about the people who built and worked on the railroad. Exhibits highlight the lives of railroad workers and their families through authentic uniforms, tools, and personal artifacts. These items give visitors—both children and adults—a glimpse into what daily life was like for those who kept the railroads running.
A Favorite for All Ages
One of the museum’s most popular attractions is a detailed diorama of the valley around the Mineral Point depot as it appeared around 1920. This impressive model was created over several years by a professional modelmaker and features the depot along with other historic railroad structures, including a turntable, engine house, and water tank—most of which no longer exist today.
Visitors can bring the scene to life with the push of a button. When activated, a steam locomotive moves along the tracks while a sound recording recreates the lively atmosphere of the depot area, complete with the sounds of the engine and railroad activity. Installed in 2009, this interactive display has quickly become a favorite among visitors of all ages.
