The Mineral Point Railroad Society operates a museum in the former Milwaukee Road depot in Mineral Point. Our museum is open seasonally (from the first weekend in May to the last weekend in October), from 10am-4pm, Thursday through Saturday and Noon-4pm on Sundays.
Inside the museum, a large collection of local railroad artifacts is on display, ranging from early documents from the Mineral Point Railroad and Illinois Central railroads (from the Civil War period) to photos and maps of Mineral Point and surrounding communities from the "golden era" of railroading (1890-1925). We also display stories and artifacts from later years (1930-1980), when the railroad was still a very proud profession but was no longer the center of life for a community such as Mineral Point.
Our museum honors the people, as much as the railroad itself, that helped to build Mineral Point. We proudly display railroad uniforms and tools from years gone by that can give children (and adults) an important insight into what life was like working on the railroad.
Finally, we have a special new attraction that should entertain children and adults alike - a realistic diorama of the valley around the Mineral Point depot, circa 1920. This diorama was constructed for us by a professional modelmaker over several years. It displays the depot and numerous other railroad structures like a turntable, engine house, and watertank. Of course, only the depot remains standing today in real life. Visitors can trigger movement of a steam locomotive through the tracks around the depot by pushing a button on the side of the case. The button also starts a sound recording that plays the sounds of the steam engine and other sounds around the depot area. This diorama has become a favorite at the museum since being installed in 2009.
